Chapter One: New Houses and New Neighbors
- Spoiler:
I tried my best to stay put. Ugh, what made Mom decide the best place for me to sit was with the luggage? A random box fell on my head, knocking off my green and white hat. I put the hat back on, and checked to see if anything in the box had broken. Nothing had.
Suddenly, I felt the truck come to a stop. The door opened. I eagerly ran out.
I noticed we were in a small town (if you can even call it a town), with only three houses. My mother came out of one of them. I guessed that was our house then.
"Destiny, we're here, honey!" Mom said. "It must be tiring riding with our things in the moving truck."
"I'll say," I groaned. "Boxes sliding everywhere, turns throwing me off-balance. Oh well, at least that's over with. Right?"
"Right," my mother smiled. "Well, this is Littleroot Town. How do you like it? This is our new home! It has a quaint feel, but it seems to be an easy place to live, don't you think?"
"I guess so," I shrugged.
"And you get your own room!" Mom continued. "Let's go inside." She grabbed my hand so I had no choice but to follow her.
"See, Destiny? Isn't it nice in here too?" Mom asked. There were large Pokémon carrying and moving things. I didn't recognise the Pokémon because I'd never been to Hoenn before, but I was sure I've read before that they were called Vigoroth. The book said that some people used large Pokémon like Vigoroth and Machoke to help carry heavy things.
My mom told me my room was upstairs, so I decided to check it out.
"Dad sent you a clock to mark our move here," Mom said as I went upstairs. "Don't forget to set it!"
Oh yes. Dad. He was the reason we were here in the first place. He had been a Gym Leader here in Hoenn for quite a while, and Mom decided to move to the region to be closer to him.
I set the clock, then checked a map that was on the wall. Yes, we were fairly close to Dad; his gym was only two towns away. When I checked my PC, I noticed that someone had left a Potion in there for me, so I decided to withdraw it.
I went downstairs. My mom was watching something on TV. She turned it off when she noticed me. "Destiny, dear, one of Dad's friends lives in town."
"Oh, that's nice," I muttered, not really listening.
"Professor Birch is his name."
"Wait, what?" I was interested now. "Dad's friends with the Pokémon Professor? And you never told me?!"
"Well, he lives right next door," Mom said. "You should go introduce yourself."
"Well of course!" I raced out the door. I was always interested in Pokémon, so meeting someone who has dedicated their life to studying them was kind of a big thing for me. I raced to the house.
A woman noticed me. "Oh, hello," she smiled. "And you are?"
"Destiny," I said. "I'm the kid who moved here."
"Oh, hi!" she said. "You know, we have a son about the same age as you. He was excited about making a new friend. He's upstairs, I think." Of course. This meant that I had to talk to him.
I went upstairs. Eventually the boy came in. He had black hair and a green and white hat, kind of like mine. "Hey, you... who are you?"
"I'm Destiny," I introduced myself again. "I'm your new next-door neighbor."
"Oh, so that's you," the boy said. "Well I didn't know that you'd be a girl."
"And what exactly does that mean?" I shot an angry glance at him.
"My dad, Professor Birch, said that our new next-door neighbor is a Gym Leader's kid, so I assumed you'd be a guy." He shrugged.
I guess that was understandable. Slightly sexist, but understandable.
"My name's Brendan. So, hi neighbor!" Brendan waved. "Hey Destiny, don't you have a Pokémon?"
"No," I sighed. "I've been wanting one, though."
"Well maybe I can catch you one," he suggested.
"You could really do that?"
"Well of course. ...Aw, darn, I forgot. I'm supposed to go help my dad catch some wild Pokémon. Some other time, okay?"
"Sure," I nodded. "Well, I guess I should go back to my mom now. See you later, Brendan!"
So I left Brendan's house.
Chapter Two: I Leik It
- Spoiler:
- I decided to look around the small town before going back to Mom's. Apparently the third house that was in the town was Professor Birch's lab, but I decided not to go in there right then. I kept looking around.
Suddenly, a small girl ran to me and tugged at my shirt to get my attention. "Um, hello!" she said. "There are scary Pokémon outside. I can hear their cries. I wanna see what's happening, but I don't have any Pokémon... Can you go see what's happening for me? Please please please?"
I was about to tell her I didn't have any Pokémon either, but I just couldn't say no to her. So I just nodded and headed toward the small path that lead to the route. After all, how bad could one route be?
Up ahead, I heard shouts. "H-help me!" a voice said. I ran up and saw none other than Professor Birch, being chased by a strange Pokémon that I've never seen before. It was brown with black stripes, looked like a rodent of sorts, and had strange zig-zag patterns in its fur. Professor Birch looked at me. "Hello? You over there, please help! In my bag, there's a Poké Ball!"
I ran over to the Professor's bag. There were three Poké Balls in plastic bags, each with a label. So this meant that I had to choose which Pokémon I was going to use to battle the zig-zagged Pokémon. I read the labels on all three Balls:
Wood Gecko Pokémon: Treecko
Chick Pokémon: Torchic
Mud Fish Pokémon: Mudkip
I had no idea what any of those were, but I knew I had to help Professor Birch. I nervously grabbed a Poké Ball. "I choose you... Mudkip!"
Mudkip came out, focused on the opposing Pokémon.
"Mudkip," I told the Mud Fish. "I'm gonna have to be your Trainer for this battle. Don't worry, it'll be quickly over with. We just have to save your owner and everything will be fine. Got it?"
Mudkip looked at me determinedly. "I'm ready," it said. Yes, I could understand it. One night when I was 8, I saw a Jirachi. I wished that I could understand Pokémon, and when I woke up the next morning, I could. Nobody believed me though. I guess it was kind of hard to believe. But it was true.
"Okay Mudkip, let's start with a Tackle," I said.
Mudkip launched himself at the opposing Pokémon. "You're going down, Zigzagoon!" he shouted. I guess the striped Pokémon was called a Zigzagoon.
Zigzagoon quickly retaliated with a Tackle of its own.
"We can't let him beat us, Mudkip! Tackle again!" I ordered.
Two more Tackles, and the Zigzagoon was defeated.
"Good job, Mudkip!" I hugged him, then held him up triumphantly.
"Whew," Professor Birch said. "I was in the tall grass to study wild Pokémon when I was jumped. You saved me. Thanks a lot!"
"Anytime," I grinned. "All in a day's work for Destiny, I guess."
"Oh, so you're Destiny!" the Pokémon Prof shook my hand. "Well it's nice to meet you. Well, this is not a place to chat, so come by my Lab later, okay?" He walked off rather quickly back to the town.
"Wait!" I called, going after him. "You forgot Mudkip!"
Now Mudkip, Professor, and I were at the lab. "So, Destiny," Birch said. "I've heard so much about you from your father."
"You have?"
"Yes. And I've heard that you don't have your own Pokémon yet. But the way you battled earlier, you pulled it off with aplomb! I guess you have your father's blood in your veins after all."
"I guess so," I shrugged.
"Oh, and as thanks for rescuing me, I'd like you to have the Mudkip you used earlier." Professor Birch petted Mudkip on his head fin.
My eyes lit up. "Really?" I looked at Mudkip. "Well, boy, do you wanna stay with me?"
"Sure," he said, hopping into my arms.
"He looks happy to be with you," the Professor noted. "If you work with Pokémon and gain experience, I think you'll make an extremely good Trainer. My kid, Brendan, is also studying Pokémon while helping me out."
"I know; I met him earlier." I nodded. "Though maybe it might be a good idea to see him, so I can show him my new Mudkip."
Birch smiled. "I think he'll be happy, too. Get him to teach you what it means to be a Trainer."
"Yes, sir!" I saluted. Mudkip tried to do a little salute too.
As I was walking toward Route 101 (that's where we rescued Professor Birch), Mudkip jumped onto my head and put on my hat. "So I heard you like Mudkip," he joked.
I laughed. "I sure do, boy."
Chapter Three: Set for Success
- Spoiler:
- Now Mudkip and I were in Oldale Town, taking a break in the Pokémon Center. Route 101 had a lot of wild Pokémon, so Mudkip ended up exhausted.
Eventually, the nurse, Joy, came out with Mudkip's Poké Ball. "Thank you for waiting," she said. "Mudkip's fully healed now."
"Thanks," I smiled. "By the way, do you know where Route 103 is? I'm supposed to meet someone there."
Nurse Joy pointed. "Just exit the town that way, and you're there."
"Okay, thanks again, Joy!" I walked out.
"So Mudkip, since you were Professor Birch's Pokémon, then you know Brendan, right?" I asked as Mudkip and I strolled along.
"Yeah, I like him," Mudkip said. "But his Treecko kinda scary..."
"Hey look, there's Brendan!" I ran up to the boy. "Hey there!"
Brendan looked up. A Wurmple that he was examining hid. "Hey, it's you!"
"Sure is," I smiled. "And I have a Pokémon too! Your dad gave him to me,"
Mudkip jumped happily.
"I see," Brendan said. "Well since we're here, how about a little battle?"
"Sure thing."
"I'll teach you what being a Trainer's about! Go, Treecko!"
"Go ahead, Mudkip!" I backed up to give the two Pokémon room to battle. "It'll be fine."
Mudkip looked at the Wood Gecko worriedly. "I hope so."
"Treecko, use Leer!" Brendan said.
Treecko looked at Mudkip in an unnerving way, and I think that made Mudkip even more scared.
"Don't let it get to you, Mudkip; use Tackle!"
Treecko Leered at Mudkip again, and Mudkip seemed more vulnerable.
"It's okay, boy, now Tackle him again!" I said, trying to be encouraging.
Mudkip obeyed, and now it seemed like at least half of Treecko's health was gone.
"Pound attack, now!" Brendan ordered.
Treecko pounded Mudkip with his large tail. I sighed, glad that it didn't do too much damage.
"One more Tackle should do it. Go!"
But instead of Tackling, Mudkip hurled dirt and mud at his opponent's face. It still succeeded to knock out the Treecko.
"Good job, Mudkip! You learned Mud Slap!" I hugged my Pokémon.
"Huh, Destiny, you're not too shabby," Brendan noted, obviously impressed. "I think I get it."
"Get what?" I asked.
"I understand why my dad has his eye out for you now," he explained. "Look, Mudkip already likes you, even though you just got him."
Mudkip nodded. "It's true!" he said, even to Brendan, he just said "Mudkip!"
"I get the feeling that you could befriend any Pokémon with ease," Brendan continued. "Head back to the Lab with me, okay?"
"Oh, hi Destiny!" Professor Birch said when I got to his Lab. Brendan was already next to him. "I heard you beat Brendan on your first try. That's excellent! Brendan's been helping me with my research for a long time. He has an extensive history as a Trainer already!" He handed me a small red electronic device. "Here, Destiny. I ordered this for my research, but I think you should have this Pokédex instead."
I gazed in astonishment at the Pokédex. "Wow..."
"The Pokédex is a high-tech tool that automatically makes a record of Pokémon you meet or catch," Professor Birch explained. "Brendan goes everywhere with his. Whenever he catches a rare Pokémon and records the data, why, he looks for me while I'm out doing fieldwork and shows me!"
Brendan gave me five Poké Balls. "Well, since you have a Pokédex you should have these. It's more fun to catch a whole bunch of Pokémon! I'm gonna explore all over the place to find different ones. If I find any cool ones, you bet I'll try to catch them!"
"Well, thanks." I said, putting the Poké Balls in my green bag.
"Awesome!" Mudkip said as we left the Lab. "Now we can go on an adventure together!"
"Wait, Destiny!"
I heard somebody running up to me. "Mom?!"
"Did you introduce yourself to Professor Birch like I said?" she asked.
"I sure did!" I showed my mother Mudkip's Poké Ball. "And he gave me a Mudkip!" Mudkip hopped onto my shoulder and showed himself to my mom.
"Oh! What an adorable Pokémon! How nice. You're your father's child, alright. You look good together with Mudkip." Mom smiled. "Oh... so that means you'll be leaving..."
I shrugged. "Yeah, I guess."
"To think that you have your very own Pokémon now... Your father will be overjoyed. But please, be careful. If anything happens, you can come on home." She hugged me and Mudkip. "Go on, go get 'em, honey!" She released me from her grasp.
"Goodbye," I walked away, trying to hide tears. I'd miss my mother. But I had Mudkip now, and together, we'd be unstoppable.
Chapter Four: Destiny Catches a Pokémon
- Spoiler:
- "So, Mudkip," I said as we walked through Route 101. "What Pokémon do you think we should catch first?"
"Hey, watch out!" Mudkip suddenly said.
"Grrr..." a black-and-grey Pokémon leapt out at us.
"Ooh, what's that?" I asked. "Let's try and catch him!"
"If you wanna catch me... or something..., you'll have to, um, battle me first," the Pokémon said.
"You're on!" I said. "Go, Mudkip!"
"Mudkip, use your Mud-Slap!" I told him.
He splashed a large amount of mud right at the opposing Pokémon's eyes. I knew it would both hurt him, and make it harder for him to hit us. He shook off some of the mud, then Tackled Mudkip.
"Okay, good. Now another Mud-Slap!"
"Is this good?" Mudkip asked.
"Perfect," I smiled. I grabbed a Poké Ball from my bag. "Poké Ball, go!" I threw it determinedly at the Pokémon. It opened up, a red beam appeared, and the Pokémon went right in.
Mudkip and I watched nervously as the Poké Ball wobbled.
Wobble.
Wobble.
Wobble.
...
Ding!
"We did it..." I picked up the Poké Ball. "We did it! We caught something all by ourselves!"
"Yeah!" Mudkip jumped with glee. "Now let's see what the Pokémon is!"
"Good idea. Come out, boy!" I let the Pokémon out of its Ball. "Now to see what you are..." I looked at my Pokédex. "Hmm... 'Poochyena, the Bite Pokémon. It savagely threatens foes with bared fangs. It chases after fleeing targets tenaciously. It turns tail and runs, however, if its foe strikes back.' That's cool!"
"Hey, you never read MY entry," Mudkip pointed out.
So I searched for Mudkip's data. "It says, 'On land, it can powerfully lift large boulders by planting its four feet and heaving. It sleeps by burying itself in soil at the water's edge.' Wow. Pretty strong, huh?"
"Yep!"
We went to the Oldale Town Pokémon Center to rest before continuing. It went about the same as it did last time, except now I was healing Poochyena too. When I left, I let both of them out of their Poké Balls. They told me they prefered to walk with me than to stay in them.
Now, we were on Route 102. That meant there were new Trainers to battle and new Pokémon to catch.
A boy walked up to us. "If you have Pokémon with you, then you're an official Pokémon Trainer! You can't say no to my challenge!" He pulled out a Poké Ball.
"No problem," I nodded. "Ready, Mudkip?"
Mudkip nodded. "Ready."
"Go, Poochyena!" the boy sent out a Poochyena.
"You have a Poochyena too? Cool," I said. "Okay, Mudkip, use Mud-Slap!"
Mudkip shot mud at his opponent, as usual.
"Poochyena, Howl!" the boy (whose name was Calvin) commanded.
Poochyena howled determinedly.
"What does THAT do?" I wondered.
"It raises his attack and makes him stronger!" Calvin laughed.
"No problem for us. Mudkip, Tackle!"
Mudkip Tackled the Poochyena.
"Poochyena, you Tackle now!"
Poochyena threw himself at Mudkip, but missed. "That's Mud-Slap for ya," Mudkip laughed.
"Mudkip, Tackle!" I shouted.
"Poochyena, you too!" the Youngster said afterwards.
Both Pokémon's attacks hit, but Poochyena seemed to be getting weaker.
"Alright, Mudkip, finish it with one more Tackle!"
Mudkip slammed into Poochyena, sending it down.
"Ugh, I lost," Calvin muttered. "I should've trained more..."
"Don't worry, you'll get better soon," I assured him. He walked toward the Oldale PokéCenter, and I went for some grass, hoping to find something to catch.
A while later, we came across a Zigzagoon limping along.
Poochyena walked up to her. "Hey, are you okay?"
"Yeah, just got my leg hurt by a Lotad," Zigzagoon winced.
"Well my Trainer can help with that!" Poochyena said, running up to me. "She's kind and awesome and you'd love being with her! And she can take you to get your leg fixed! It'll be great! Trust me!"
I laughed. "Well, I COULD use another team member. What do ya say, Zigzagoon?"
"Well.. sure..." she said.
"See that? She says it's fine. Come on, throw the Poké Ball! Catch her, hurry!" Poochyena jumped up and down.
"Okay, calm down," I tapped the Poké Ball gently on Zigzagoon's head and she went in.
Wobble.
Wobble.
Wobble.
Ding!
"Good job!" Poochyena yapped. "You caught her! Now let her out so I can see her!"
"Okay. Come on out, Zigzagoon!" I let the Zigzagoon out of her Ball. Then I decided to read her Pokédex entry. "The Tiny Raccoon Pokémon. Rubbing its nose against the ground, it always wanders back and forth in search of something. It is distinguished by the zigzag footprints it leaves." I looked at the footprints the Zigzagoon had made, and noticed a small zig-zag mark in it.
We stopped by the Pokémon Center to heal Zigzagoon's leg. "Hey, Poochyena," I said. "What's been up with you?"
"Um, what do you mean?" he asked.
"Well when I met you, you seemed all bashful, but after Zigzagoon came along, you went crazy!"
"Well... Pokémon change... right?"
"Oh, I see," I giggled. "Looks like little Poochy has a case of puppy love!"
"WHAT? That's not true!" Poochyena Tackled me. "...Well, okay. But if you tell Zigzagoon or Mudkip or ANYONE..." he growled.
"Okay, okay!" I laughed.
Nurse Joy came back with Zigzagoon. "Your Zigzagoon's just fine now," she said.
"Thanks," I nodded.
"Look! A city!" Mudkip exclaimed.
"Awesome," Poochyena barked.
"Let me read the sign," I walked up to the sign, that was next to a Pokémon Center. "Petalburg City. 'Where people mingle with nature'. Sounds like a nice place."
"And you can see your father," Mudkip added.
"Yeah..." I said. "I think we'll do that right now!" I and my Pokémon walked determinedly to my dad's Gym.
Chapter Five: Norman and Wally
- Spoiler:
"Leader: Norman. 'A man in pursuit of power!'" I read the sign by the Gym.
"Well let's go in!" Poochyena barked.
"Hm?"
I heard his voice. I ran up to him. He was tall, with black hair. He noticed me. "Well if it isn't Destiny!" he smiled. "So are you finished moving in?"
"We sure are!" I grinned.
"Well I'm surprised you managed to get here by yourself."
"I didn't come by myself..." I showed him my team, which consisted of Mudkip, Zigzagoon, and Poochyena. "My Pokémon helped me along the way! And I'm gonna be a Trainer, just like you."
"That's great news," my father said. "I'll be looking forward to seeing what kind of Trainer you'll become."
About that moment, a boy walked into the gym. He looked about my age and had messy green hair. "Hello?" he said. He walked up to Norman. I kindly stepped aside. I listened to their conversation. "Um, I..." the boy said. "I'd like to get a Pokémon, please..."
"Oh, you're Wally, right?" my dad asked.
"I'm going to go stay with my relatives in Vurdanturf," Wally said. "I thought I would be lonely by myself, so I wanted to take a Pokémon along. But I've never caught a Pokémon before... I don't know how."
"Hm. I see," Norman said. "Destiny, you heard that, right? Go with Wally and make sure he safely catches a Pokémon."
"Yes sir," I nodded.
Norman had given Wally a Poké Ball to catch something with. He also let Wally borrow his Zigzagoon. "Don't worry," I told him. "I've already caught two Pokémon, so I can tell you how it's done." We walked back onto the Route where I had just been.
"Wild Pokémon hide in tall grass like this, right?" Wally asked.
"Yep, it's true!" I said. I heard a rustle. I looked down and there was a very small Pokémon with a red horn, green hair, and a body that looked like it was wearing a robe of sorts. "Wow, a Ralts! Go on, Wally, you can do it!"
"He's cute..." Wally said, looking at the Ralts. "I'll do my best. Go Zigzagoon!" Wally let out Norman's Zigzagoon.
"So you just weaken the Ralts a little bit, then throw your Poké Ball," I explained. "If you're lucky, the Ralts is yours."
"Okay," Wally nodded. "Zigzagoon, Tackle attack!" I watched as the Zigzagoon Tackled the Ralts, who retaliated with a Growl. "Okay, Poké Ball, go!" Wally threw his Poké Ball. It wobbled three times, and then clicked.
So Wally gave Norman back his Zigzagoon, and happily went home with his Ralts. "Now, Destiny," my father said. "If you want to become a strong Pokémon Trainer, here's my advice: Head to Rustboro City beyond this town. There, you should challenge the gym leader Roxanne. After her, go on to other Gyms and defeat their Leaders. Collect badges from them. Understood?"
I nodded. "Yes, Dad. But you're a Gym Leader too, right?"
"Of course," he laughed. "We'll battle one day, Destiny. But only after you've gotten stronger."
"Okay," I smiled. I left the Gym, on my way to Rustboro.
