MothClan book 1: New Beginnings

"Something big like a rabbit." he pressed against her, to keep her close.

Flarepaw noticed his closeness, it made her purr. "Sounds great! A rabbit will be no match for me." she boasted, smiling.

He purred and smiled at her. "I hope not. I'll be watching."

She smiled back warmly and they continued walking.
"Don't go near the group of maples," Crystalwing warned them as they passed her to leave camp. "There's a fox on the loose out there, so be careful!"
Flarepaw's eyes widened. "A fox?"

Shadowdragon wrapped his tail around Flarepaw briefly. "Don't worry. I'll protect you."


Wolfshadow's ears perked and he glanced at Crystalwing.

"Okay, I trust you." she mewed, briefly pressing her nose into his shoulder. They started moving again and set off into the forest, Flarepaw more cautious now.

Crystalwing glanced at her friend Wolfshadow thoughtfully while she waited for Whitelark to treat her.

Shadowdragon smiled and sniffed the air to make sure the fox wouldn't sneak up on them. "I think we should hunt here."

Wolfshadow gazed towards Whitelark then looked away before anyone could notice.

"Alright," Flarepaw said, trying to sound determined. She tasted the air, looking for rabbit.

Shadowdragon watched her while scenting the air for fox scent.

After a few moments, Flarepaw thought she caught a rabbit scent-trail. It was fresh. She followed it for a few tail-lengths before hearing munching sounds. She then spotted a rabbit eating some grass. Flarepaw looked back at her mentor. "Over there," she whispered, pointing with her tail.

Silverwater padded over to the brand new fresh-kill pile and picked out a mouse. This is nice. She thought contentedly, settling down beside the freshly woven nursery.

Honeypaw walked out of the apprentice den noticing silverwater she started running towards her "Silverwater!"

"Good job, now go get it." said Shadowdragon.

"We tried to drive it off, but there weren't enough of us..." Crystalwing looked at Spottedrose, making sure she was hearing. "We'll have to send another patrol and chase it off for good. Tell Mothstar." She panted again, and saw Whitelark approaching to help her.

Whitelark scampered towards Crystalwing with bundles of herbs in her jaws. "Do you have any scratches? bites?" she questioned

Wolfshadow watched Whitelark with loving eyes as she did that, but to other cats it would look like he was admiring Crystalwing.

Flarepaw nodded, then started to creep forward. Once she thought she was close enough, she broke out into a run. The rabbit's head jerked up as it noticed her, and it tried to flee. Flarepaw was too quick for it though, and after a few strides, she pounced on it, giving it a killing bite. "Ah, that was satisfying," she purred, looking back at Shadowdragon.

"I have a pretty deep bite on my hind leg. And a couple scratches on my shoulder, but those aren't so bad," Crystalwing answered.

Shadowdragon purred and smiled at her. "Great catch!" he licked her ear.

Silverwater peered out of her den. "Oh, hi!"

Daisyheart laid next to the fresh-kill pile with a sigh. She felt bad for Silverwater. I guess my life isn't the worst. She shook her head to clear her thoughts. She didn't want to think about her past; just focus on the present. Maybe there's something I can do to make this Clan better... She stood up and looked around camp. "Anybody need any help with anything?" she called.

"Thanks!" Flarepaw purred, smiling back at him. Just then she noticed a trace of fox scent not too far away. It was pretty stale, but it still made her really uneasy. "Uh... I know we just got out here, but think we could go back to camp now?" she asked her mentor, knowing that he probably picked up the scent now too.

Shadowdragon scented the fox and growled. "Yes.... we should."

"Over here!" Spottedrose called. "Crystalwing found a fox, and I'm going to see if I can find it. Do you want to come?"

Flarepaw picked up the rabbit in her jaws. Trying her best to not let it drag on the ground, she followed Shadowdragon, relieved when they reached the safety of camp again.

Shadowdragon purred when they got into camp and glanced at the nursery to see if Silverwater was there or not.

"Welcome back!" Silverwater purred as she slid from the den. "How is Flarepaw's training going?"
