Thrushstar padded into the clearing, taking a vole out of the fresh-kill pile. Our patrols sure have been fruitful. The pile is huge!

Featherbreeze rushed up to her leader, who was at the fresh kill pile. "Hello Thrushstar. How are you?" she mewed.

"Hey, Featherbreeze." Thrushstar said. "I'm doing rather well."

"Great! I'm fine." She grabbed a vole out of the pile, and sat down. "Want to share?"

"Okay." Thrushstar said.

Fierypaw bounded over to Thrushstar and Featherbreeze.

"Hi Fireypaw." Ashbreeze said, padding out toward the group.

Featherbreeze sighed. "There hasn't been much prey today. We need to fill up this fresh kill pile more than ever!"

"Yeah." Ashbreeze said. "Well, you're the deputy. You can have a patrol."

Fierypaw beamed. "Can I go on patrol with you?" he asked excitedly.

Featherbreeze sighed. "Why not? Do you want to come, Ashbreeze?"

"Okay." Ashbreeze said. "That would be a good idea."

Featherbreeze led the way out of camp, her tail flicking back and forth.

After he saw Featherbreeze leave on patrol, Thornpelt padded over to the fresh-kill pile. Trying to avoid contact with the others, he silently took his share from the pile and returned to the den. Thornpelt considered going for a hunt, but the fresh-kill pile was still quite full, so he decided to wait until hunting was necessary.

"Let's try going for the densest part of the forest. The part with the most trees," Featherbreeze said matter-of-factly.

"That sounds like a good idea, Featherbreeze," Fierypaw agreed with a small nod.

"There's sure to be plenty of squirrels there," she explained. She raced deeper into the trees.

Fierypaw nodded in agreement, then dashed after Featherbreeze.
