The Jewel in the Sky: How Jewelsky's Story Began; new banner is up! ;w;
this is bad lol
- Spoiler:
Prologue
The ginger cat stared into his eyes. "Ashwind, you know it's not possible. You know we can't be in love! You are from RainClan!"
Ashwind gazed back. "Does the fact that you are from LightningClan have to tear everything apart?" He licked her fur.
The ginger cat shook her head. "I don't want it to. But it does."
Ashwind sighed. He knew she was right.
"I love you, Ashwind. But our love will have to forever be kept a secret." meowed the ginger cat solemnly.
"Don't I know that? Is it not better to have love be kept a secret than to have no love at all?"
The she-cat simply nodded.
There was a long silence, and then, from the ginger cat, came a "I have to get back to my Clan. Farewell."
Ashwind smiled. "Farewell, Amberfoot."
Chapter 1
Claweye rushed through the bracken. "Amberfoot? Are they here?"
Scissorleaf nodded. "The kits are here, and all living. Amberfoot's fine, too." She paused. "But it is rather unusual... Never have I seen a queen have so many kits before in one litter."
"What do you mean?" Claweye raced into the nursery. There laid Amberfoot, with one, two, three, four... five kits.
"Hello, Claweye." Amberfoot gave a tired smile.
"Five kits? How did you make it through that? Don't most queens have four or less?"
Amberfoot chuckled. "I guess I'm not most queens."
Claweye sat down beside her. "Well, let's name them."
Three of the kits were black-and-white like Claweye, their father. The other two were ginger tabbies with white markings in different places.
Amberfoot pointed to a black-and-white she-kit. "Opalkit." she mewed.
"Brushkit." purred Claweye, licking a black-and-white tom.
"Look at him! He's got such long legs." Amberfoot nuzzled another black-and-white tom.
Claweye laughed. "Then we'll name him Longkit."
Amberfoot nodded. "What should we name the tabbies?"
"I think this one should be Berrykit." Claweye's tail brushed against one of them, and she let out a whimper.
"Berrykit. Yes, that's a good name for her." Amberfoot paused. "Let's see. I think this last she-kit will be... Jewelkit."
Chapter 2
"Wake up, Jewelkit!"
Jewelkit moaned. Flarekit!
"Ugh. I don't want to get up." Jewelkit, who had opened her eyes just yesterday, staggered to her paws anyway.
Flarekit bounced around. "There's a ceremony! You've never seen a ceremony before. But I have! It's so cool. Last time there was a ceremony, Emberkit became Emberpaw. You never know what it's going to be about!"
"All right." Jewelkit yawned and padded into the clearing, where Cheetahstar was looking down over LightningClan.
Jewelkit's eyes went wide as Rowanpaw trotted up the Highrock next to Scissorleaf. Cheetahstar and Scissorleaf looked down on Rowanpaw as they performed the ceremony. Rowanpaw was now the medicine cat apprentice.
"Rowanpaw! Rowanpaw!" Jewelkit heard her Clan chant. This must be the custom. She joined in the chanting.
Someday, I'm going to be an apprentice. Not a medicine cat apprentice, but a warrior apprentice. I want to be strong for my Clan.
She raced toward the nursery with Opalkit and Brushkit beside her, Flarekit, Longkit, and Berrykit coming up close behind.
But for now, we are kits. We should enjoy it while it lasts... Jewelkit thought to herself.
Burying herself in Amberfoot's fur, she asked: "Did you cheer for Scissorleaf when she became a medicine cat apprentice? After all, she is your best friend."
Amberfoot nodded. "Everyone cheers. But I'm sure I was cheering the loudest."
Jewelkit smiled. "I wonder who my very best friend will be."
She closed her eyes. Oh, well. I'll know pretty soon.
Chapter 3
Claweye snarled. These rogues deserve to die! he thought, raking at one's muzzle. He was currently battling them alongside Frostlily and the rest of the patrol. They had accidentally stumbled into a band of rogues. Suddenly, his apprentice, Darkpaw, jumped in beside him.
"I'll help you fight!" Darkpaw yowled. She slashed ferociously at a white rogue's back.
"Thanks, Darkpaw!" Claweye paused only for a brief moment before fighting again.
Frostlily swiped at one of the attackers. "You'll never win, rogues!"
The cats seemed to pause. "Rogues?" a big black, gray, and white cat laughed. "Since when were we rogues?"
A brown apprentice chuckled. "Killertwist, they called us rogues!"
"Yes, Deadpaw. And they are wrong." Killertwist smiled. "WE ARE NIGHTCLAN!"
"Huh?" Darkpaw asked.
Killertwist glared at Darkpaw, and Claweye feared she might be hurt by the large she-cat. "NightClan is the strongest Clan. We are battle-hungry, power-hungry, and most of all, blood-hungry." Killertwist showed her fangs. "It is not a Clan for such pitiful weaklings as yourselves."
"We aren't pitiful!" Claweye retorted.
"Oh, yeah?" sneered Deadpaw. "Ever seen an apprentice kill a warrior? 'Cause you're about to!" She lunged for Claweye's neck.
Claweye ducked just in time. Oh, StarClan save me. I'm about to be killed by an apprentice!
Deadpaw advanced forward swiftly. "You can't avoid me forever!"
Claweye raced away, and Killertwist called, "Coward!" She signaled with her tail for Deadpaw to go after him.
Before he even knew what was happening, Deadpaw was racing toward him. His Clanmates rushed to defend him.
All but one.
Darkpaw.
She stood there, seemingly in awe of what was going on instead of in terror.
Why was Darkpaw such a traitor?
Claweye didn't have any time to think until claws sank into his neck and ended his life on earth.
Chapter 4
"Claweye is dead!"
Frostlily's call echoed through the camp.
As Frostlily began to explain how, tears formed in Jewelkit's eyes. She didn't care how. He was gone now.
Jewelkit heard the name "Darkpaw" in Frostlily's story.
Darkpaw! That's it! She will comfort me. He was her mentor, and she vowed to protect me if something bad happened to me.
Jewelkit bounded over to Darkpaw. The apprentice's eyes were unreadable, and they bore no pain.
"Darkpaw? I was wondering if you could comfort me... you know, since Claweye is dead, and he was your mentor." Jewelkit mewed.
Darkpaw glanced down at Jewelkit. "Of course." She didn't say it lovingly, just like it was a task she had just been forced to do.
Jewelkit buried her muzzle in Darkpaw's short, soft, fur. "I miss him!" she whispered.
There was a long pause.
It seemed to take moons, or maybe even moments, before Darkpaw replied.
"I miss him, too."
But Jewelkit sensed the low amount of feeling in Darkpaw's voice. Did she really miss him?
~~~~~
Darkpaw glanced up at Amberfoot. "Why'd you call me to the clearing? It's the middle of the night. We're supposed to be sitting vigil for Claweye now."
"Because I have to tell you something." Amberfoot took a deep breath. "I am your mother."
Chapter 5
"What?" Darkpaw gasped. "I don't understand!"
"Darkpaw, listen to me. I did not find you on the edge of Clan territory. I gave birth to you there." Amberfoot explained.
Darkpaw's eyes went wide. "Any other kits...?"
Amberfoot shook her head. "Not in that litter."
"Are your kits still my blood relatives?"
"Yes."
"Who was my father?"
"Ashwind of RainClan."
"Do you still love him?"
"Yes, I do."
"Why'd you take Claweye as a mate?"
"Because I love him, too. But not as much as Ashwind."
"Do you love me?"
Amberfoot nuzzled Darkpaw. "Of course. I will always love you."
~~~~~
Jewelkit gasped. "Opalkit! Dogs! Right behind you!"
Opalkit laughed. "What kind of a joke is that?"
"It's not one!" Brushkit yelped.
Opalkit turned around. Indeed, a pack of big brown dogs were rustling through the bushes.
"RUN!" yowled Amberfoot. And so they did.
Chapter 6
"Opalkit!" Jewelkit screamed. She was the slowest, right in the back.
Opalkit panted. "Jewelkit, help me!"
Jewelkit nodded. "Grab my tail! Quick!"
Just as Opalkit lunged forth to grab onto her sister's tail, she stumbled and lost her footing.
"OPALKIT! NO!" wailed Jewelkit.
Opalkit didn't try to get up. "It's okay, Jewelkit. I will go to StarClan."
Jewelkit didn't turn back as she heard a dog snarl and a kit shriek.
Opalkit has distracted the dogs and sacrificed her life for us.
As soon as the warriors had fought the dogs off, tears streamed from Jewelkit's eyes.
Thank you, Opalkit.
I could never be that brave.
And that night, the Clan sat vigil again, two nights after they had done it for Claweye.
Jewelkit couldn't possibly have slept that night, so in a way, she sat vigil, too.
Spotting what she thought was a new star in the sky, a sad smile formed across her face.
One stumble can change your life forever. she thought.
Or even end it.
Chapter 7
"I'm not an intruder." Darkpaw vowed.
Killertwist glared at her. "How can we be sure?"
Darkpaw smiled, an evil glint in her eyes. "Because I have brought the body of a kit I have killed myself."
~~~~~
Amberfoot panicked. "Where's Brushkit?" It was the day after Opalkit had gone to StarClan.
"I don't know." Longkit mewed.
Jewelkit noticed a small red patch where Brushkit had been laying last night. "Blood!" she pointed out.
Amberfoot gasped and followed the scent trail. It led to a shady forest.
"Darkpaw...?" Amberfoot whispered.
Jewelkit opened her nostrils. Yes, there was a stale scent of Darkpaw here!
All of a sudden, a fox leapt out of the bushes, snarling.
Berrykit squealed in terror as the fox swiped at the kits.
Yet Amberfoot let out a ferocious yowl. The fox battled with her until the fox was left unconscious.
"Come on!" Amberfoot hurried through the trees.
Jewelkit spotted a black cat with white and gray markings. It was Killertwist! The cat who had been described to them!
This is NightClan camp! The shocking realization pounded through Jewelkit's ears.
Chapter 8
Jewelkit spotted a bloody black-and-white body on the ground.
Berrykit shrieked before Jewelkit could.
"Brushkit! What's happened to him?" Berrykit yelped.
She alerted Killertwist of their presence by her squeal. The large she-cat turned around and stormed over to them.
"What do you think you're doing in NightClan camp?" she demanded, growling.
Amberfoot backed away a few steps. "I was following the scent trail of my son, Brushkit."
"AND YOU KILLED HIM!" Longkit wailed.
Killertwist laughed. "Me? No. I couldn't come into your camp without someone noticing! But I know who killed him."
Jewelkit gasped "You do?"
"Please tell us!" yowled Berrykit.
Amberfoot silenced her kits with a paw.
"Killertwist, who murdered my son?" she inquired.
Her amber eyes met Killertwist's.
"Do you really want to know?" asked Killertwist after about a thousand moons.
Amberfoot nodded.
"Darkpaw." An evil grin spread across the NightClan leader's face.
Chapter 9
Cheetahstar was just about to exile Darkpaw from camp. Amberfoot stormed into the apprentices' den.
Jewelkit watched in terror as Darkpaw growled that she was joining NightClan and began to run away.
But Jewelkit got in her path.
"Why are you doing this, Darkpaw?" she pleaded.
Darkpaw stared Jewelkit down. "Because you have everything I ever wanted."
"What is that?"
"A family who accepts you instead of tearing you away."
"What do you mean by that?"
"I mean that I'm half-Clan! And Amberfoot never bothered to tell me I was her kit!"
"You are?" Jewelkit staggered backward in shock. "I thought she only loved Claweye!"
Darkpaw's eyes narrowed. "You'd think so. But you have no idea."
In the moonlight, tears could be seen streaming down Darkpaw's face as she ran away.
And from RainClan, a gray cat was watching this all, eyes watering.
Is this really her?
Is she...
my daughter?
Chapter 10
"Flarekit has greencough!" Longkit gasped. "She's been wheezing all day!"
Berrykit gasped. "Oh, no!"
"I'm afraid we might lose her." mewed Longkit quietly.
"Tell Amberfoot! And stay away from her. Just leave her with Scissorleaf." instructed Jewelkit.
Longkit nodded and bounded off to tell their mother.
The cold leaf-bare wind nipped at Jewelkit's pelt. She hadn't forgotten what Darkpaw had told her last night.
"You'd think so. But you have no idea."
The chilly weather wasn't the only thing making Jewelkit shiver and her fur bristle.
It was the hatred she had seen in Darkpaw's eyes before she went to NightClan.
And suddenly, a shock of cry and anguish went up.
"Longkit has caught the greencough!"
It was Amberfoot.
"Oh, my. He went to see Flarekit, didn't he?" Berrykit inquired.
"Must have." Amberfoot nodded.
Jewelkit's gaze turned toward the medicine den. The loud sound of coughing escaped.
Oh, StarClan. Keep them safe, please! I've lost so much... she prayed silently, only to hope that she would be answered.
Chapter 11
Jewelkit watched anxiously as Amberfoot talked to Scissorleaf.
Amberfoot returned with a grim look on her face. "Flarekit is getting better."
"And Longkit?" Berrykit whimpered.
Amberfoot sighed. "Scissorleaf is trying her best to save him."
"He's going to die, isn't he? Longkit will die!" wailed Jewelkit.
Amberfoot gave a sad glance at Jewelkit, her eyes clouded with grief.
Jewelkit rushed to the medicine den. "I have to see my brother... one last time."
Berrykit followed, and although Amberfoot tried to stop them, she knew she couldn't.
Scissorleaf didn't even notice it when Jewelkit and Berrykit padded in. She was too busy working with herbs for Longkit.
She turned around to give him some and noticed his sisters. "What are you doing here?" she asked.
"We wanted to see Longkit." mewed Berrykit.
Silently, Jewelkit added: before he dies.
Scissorleaf nodded. "All right. But keep your distance. You don't want to catch greencough, too."
They nodded, and Jewelkit padded up to him.
"Longkit?" she meowed.
Longkit glanced up slowly. "Berrykit? Jewelkit?"
Berrykit's eyes were watering. "Why did you have to see Flarekit?"
"Isn't it obvious?" Longkit rasped. "You couldn't tell that I loved her?"
Jewelkit glanced at Berrykit, seeming to read her sister's thoughts. No, we couldn't.
"You did?" inquired Jewelkit.
Longkit nodded weakly.
He paused and then spoke. "But now is my time to go to StarClan. Tell Flarekit what I always meant to tell her, for I was too cowardly to bring myself to say it, even though I am just a kit."
"You are not just a kit." Jewelkit whispered.
And with that, Longkit's body fell limp for eternity.
Chapter 12
"Amberfoot!" Berrykit wailed.
But it was too late. Amberfoot had jumped into battle for the sake of her Clan.
NightClan had been battling the other four Clans ruthlessly for moonrises now. They took the lives of so many — and in more ways than one. Darkpaw was fighting alongside NightClan this time, not caring who she killed.
But Jewelkit did. She knew she would never see Amberfoot again.
Be brave, Amberfoot. Jewelkit thought.
~~~~~
Amberfoot's heart raced. Blood was being spilled everywhere, the anguished cries of cats dying echoing through the air.
I have to team up with someone.
Suddenly, she spotted a familiar gray pelt.
Ashwind's bright blue eyes stared at her.
"Ashwind!" she called, racing to him.
He growled. "I told you to have a fake mate, not a real one."
"Huh? How do you...?"
"I've been checking to see what's going on. You've had another litter of kits with Claweye!"
"But I still love you." Amberfoot mewed.
Ashwind's eyes suddenly widened. "Look out!" he cried.
Chapter 13
She's going to pay for what she's done. She's a liar, and she abandoned me! Darkpaw thought as she sunk her fangs into Amberfoot's neck.
~~~~~
Featherpool stared down at Jewelkit with her bright, round, green eyes. "You've been through a lot, haven't you?" she mewed.
Jewelkit sighed. "Yes." she muttered. It wasn't like she wanted to be with Featherpool!
As soon as Amberfoot had leapt into battle, Berrykit had run off. It was sunset now, and she still hadn't come back. Jewelkit figured she had run away.
We've got no home. There's no family for us here.
Jewelkit didn't want to live in the same nest as Featherpool and her kits. Riverkit and Hawkkit were so awful!
Riverkit always rambled on about things that nobody cared about, and Hawkkit bossed everyone around.
Jewelkit's life wasn't fair. She'd lost everything she'd ever loved.
Maybe I can run away, too.
Jewelkit looked up to StarClan. A new star was shining brightly above.
"Jewelkit, you are meant to stay in LightningClan. Do not run away."
"Amberfoot?" Jewelkit whispered.
Yes. That's Amberfoot. she reassured herself.
And Riverkit and Hawkkit and Featherpool couldn't tell her otherwise.
Chapter 14
Amberfoot had not survived the battle. But Featherpool had, and she was showing off her scars proudly to prove it.
Jewelkit sighed. She doesn't have to be such a show-off!
Jewelkit ran to the medicine den, where Rowanpaw and Scissorleaf were working.
"Hello, Jewelkit." mewed Scissorleaf solemnly.
"Hi, Scissorleaf." Jewelkit replied.
"What brings you here?" asked Rowanpaw.
Jewelkit explained everything as quickly as possible. "Any dreams from StarClan yet?"
Both cats shook their heads.
Scissorleaf's eyes brightened. "But I did receive an omen yesterday!"
Jewelkit stared up at the medicine cat hopefully.
"I could see an image in the crinkles of a sage leaf... It was a kit that looked just like you, padding around in a burnt meadow."
"Thanks, Scissorleaf!" Jewelkit mewed.
Excited thoughts filled Jewelkit's head.
I know where I'm going to go to find Berrykit!
With that, Jewelkit ran off into the morning sunrise.
And it was such a beautiful sight to see her running off to find her sister in the new light of the dawning day.
Chapter 15
Longkit, I miss you. How I wish we could have loved...
Flarekit sighed. "I will never love again." she whispered.
~~~~~
Jewelkit ran until her paws were sore, then located something.
The Moonfall!
She drank from its crystal-clear water, then fell asleep.
"Amberfoot, where are you?" Jewelkit asked, panicked.
A familiar pelt brushed up against Jewelkit's. "Right here, Jewelkit."
Three small kits and a large tom came up.
"Claweye! Brushkit! Opalkit! Longkit!" exclaimed Jewelkit. "Can you help me find Berrykit?"
Claweye nodded. "She is in Strike Meadow, a place no cat has yet discovered."
Jewelkit's eyes widened. "And where can I find it?"
"Follow the brightest star in the sky." mewed Opalkit.
"When you reach the end of the trail, there you will find her." Brushkit meowed.
Longkit purred. "May StarClan light your path, Jewelkit."
Jewelkit smiled and her eyes opened.
Chapter 16
Jewelkit looked up. Where is the brightest star in the sky?
Suddenly, a bright flash appeared. It was a star, shining like a jewel in the sky!
~~~~~
"Come on, Darkpaw. It's time to go to the Shadowstream!" Moorpaw mewed.
"Coming!" Darkpaw bounded after Moorpaw and the others trekking to the Shadowstream, the place where the NightClan cats visited with the Place of No Stars.
When they had reached the nearly black river, everyone took a drink from the water.
There was nobody in the Dark Forest.
Is this because I've never met anyone from here? Darkpaw wondered.
All of a sudden, a loud, echoing voice was heard.
"Darkpaw, you have power more than any other. You were meant for NightClan.
"You are invincible. Immortal. Only one thing can hurt you."
"What is that?" Darkpaw asked.
"I will tell you later."
Darkpaw woke up. "It said I was invincible..."
Moorpaw was already awake. "Ha! Let's see about that."
She leapt for Darkpaw's throat, but Darkpaw felt no pain.
Chapter 17
The star seemed to burn out just as Jewelkit reached a dry meadow.
"It was once a forest..." Jewelkit whispered.
She rushed through the area, calling her sister's name.
"Berrykit, where are you?" Jewelkit cried out, her voice echoing all throughout Strike Meadow.
The only growth in sight were a few scrubby bushes on the edge of the area.
Maybe she's hiding there! Jewelkit thought, rushing over.
As soon as she was there, she found herself staring into a pair of gleaming eyes.
Amber eyes.
They looked exactly like Jewelkit's.
Jewelkit stared in awe. "Berrykit?"
A cat's shape leaped out of the bushes. She was the size of a kit.
Berrykit smiled. "Jewelkit! I'm so glad to see you!" she mewed.
"You, too." Jewelkit laughed. "Come on, come back to LightningClan with me."
Berrykit's expression saddened. "About that..."
Jewelkit turned around. "What?"
"I don't want to live in LightningClan anymore."
Chapter 18
"It is time for your assessment." Stealthlock smiled.
Darkpaw smiled back at her mentor. "What must I do?"
"Kill a Clan warrior."
"I've done it before." Darkpaw's teeth shone. She rushed to RainClan camp. Now to get rid of Ashwind.
She found him walking near the edge of camp. Unsheathing her claws, she got down in a crouch and powerfully sprang upward towards Ashwind's throat, preparing to have her teeth sink into flesh.
A shriek of agony was heard, and Darkpaw's fangs grasped on to a cat's neck. But it wasn't Ashwind's. A she-cat with a vole in her mouth had just been walking by as soon as Darkpaw had pounced.
"Icepelt!" Ashwind wailed. When he realized that the killer was Darkpaw, his eyes blazed with anger. "I don't ever want to see you again! You are not my daughter, Darkpaw! Not anymore!"
Darkpaw stood frozen for a moment before bounding away. I may not have killed Ashwind, but at least I will become a warrior.
~~~~~
Jewelkit froze. "You what?"
Berrykit sighed and nodded.
"But you have to come back!" Jewelkit cried. "Please!"
"There's no family waiting for me in LightningClan. You can stay here with your only surviving family member and become a loner, or go back to your Clan, where you're a lonely outcast nobody cares about." Berrykit mewed. "Your choice."
Chapter 19
"I, Killertwist, call upon the Place of No Stars to look down on this apprentice. She has trained hard to understand the ways of your Code of Night, and I commend her to you as a warrior in her turn. Darkpaw, do you promise to uphold the Wisdom of Night and to take revenge on other Clans, even at the cost of your life?" Killertwist was performing Darkpaw's warrior ceremony.
Darkpaw nodded. "I do."
Killertwist went on. "Then by the powers of the Place of No Stars, I give you your warrior name. Darkpaw, from this moment you will be known as Darkgem. The Dark Forest honors your bloodthirst and vengefulness, and we welcome you as a full warrior of NightClan."
"Darkgem! Darkgem!"
~~~~~
Jewelkit stared back at her sister. "We could have a great future in LightningClan!"
"I've made up my mind." Berrykit retorted.
"But you could at least visit..."
"I'm not ever going back, Jewelkit! I'll never come to LightningClan again! Don't you know that? Haven't I told you?"
"Yes, but... I was just thinking..."
"Well, think again."
"But they found Amberfoot's body, and they buried her... You could at least pay your respects to her and visit her grave."
Berrykit turned around. "They what?"
Jewelkit nodded.
"All right, let's go. But this is just visiting Amberfoot's grave. I'm coming right back to become a loner again." Berrykit meowed as she padded toward her former Clan. Jewelkit followed close behind, smiling.
Chapter 20
"Amberfoot, you walk with StarClan now." Berrykit cried.
"We miss you and love you, but we will join you again someday." whimpered Jewelkit.
Berrykit's tears were raining down. "We know you never did anything to hurt anyone."
Flashes of Darkpaw raced through Jewelkit's mind. She would think otherwise. But we know better.
"Thank you for always being there." Berrykit went on.
She began to pad away, but Jewelkit called, "Wait!"
Berrykit glanced at Jewelkit. "What is it, Jewelkit?"
"Please stay in LightningClan. I don't want to live alone!"
"But you have Amberfoot's grave. Remember?"
"I need someone to talk to! I can't talk to Amberfoot. And you'll be alone, too."
"I never thought of that." Berrykit shrunk down.
"Will you stay?" inquired Jewelkit.
"I will stay." Berrykit answered.
Jewelkit purred. "Thank you."
"No, thank you for helping me realize where I belong."
Jewelkit was confused. "How did I help you realize that?"
"It was where my sister was." Berrykit smiled.
Chapter 21
"Jewelpaw! Berrypaw! Jewelpaw! Berrypaw!" the Clan chanted.
Jewelpaw beamed. Thank you, Cheetahstar. she thought. At least you care about me.
~~~~~
Cheetahstar was thinking of names for the apprentices. She was planning in advance.
Hmm... I like Blackpetal for Blackpaw. I'll have to talk to Frostlily about that. And Rowanpaw can be Rowanshade. Wonder what Scissorleaf will think about that one? Maybe Jewelshimmer for Jewelpaw, and Berryfrost for Berrypaw.
Suddenly, a comet shot across the sky, leaving its blazing, starry trail behind it.
"Look for the jewel in the sky. The stars have aligned for this moment. Some jewels are softer than others, but this one is hard as rock."
"Dapplestar!" Cheetahstar yowled. She recognized the former leader's voice.
Scissorleaf padded up to her. "You saw the comet, too?"
Cheetahstar nodded.
"Then I think we know who that refers to." Scissorleaf purred.
"Yes." Cheetahstar smiled. "The jewel in the sky."
Jewelshimmer will not be her name.
I will name her Jewelsky.
"She is hard as rock." whispered Cheetahstar.
Chapter 22
Jewelpaw was waiting for Berrypaw to come back from the dirtplace.
Jewelpaw had waited a long time, and her sister still hadn't come.
"Do you think something is wrong?" she asked Emberpaw.
Emberpaw shrugged. "I wouldn't worry too much. But I have to go train with Blackpaw and Frostlily now." She bounded off.
Jewelpaw sighed slowly.
Scissorleaf padded up to her. "Don't worry. What's the worst thing that could happen?"
Jewelpaw tried not to think about that. "Berrypaw might be in trouble!"
"True." The medicine cat curled her tail around Jewelpaw like she was her second mother. (Which she technically was.) "You have to have faith."
"Faith?" Jewelpaw's eyes shimmered.
Scissorleaf nodded. "Faith in StarClan. They will keep her safe."
"Yeah, they will." mewed Jewelpaw.
Scissorleaf gave a warm smile.
"Can we go look for her?" Jewelpaw asked.
"I think that would be a good idea. Let's bring Stealthvixen along."
Jewelpaw smiled. Stealthvixen may have been a fox, but she was kind, smart, and loyal as any warrior. Not only that, but she was fierce in defending her Clanmates. Jewelpaw liked her.
"All right." Jewelpaw meowed once the three were together. "Let's go!"
Chapter 23
Scissorleaf, Stealthvixen, and Jewelpaw had finished scouring the CloudClan and RainClan borders. They approached the StormClan border in search of Berrypaw, and the first thing that Jeweipaw saw was a small gray she-kit with green eyes.
"Hello!" Jewelpaw mewed. "What's your name?"
"I'm Jadekit." the StormClan kit mewed. "And you are?"
Jewelpaw smiled. "Jewelpaw, with my friend Stealthvixen and medicine cat Scissorleaf!"
"Cool!" Jadekit purred. She didn't seem to be afraid of Stealthvixen at all, unlike most other kits.
"What is a kit like you doing outside of camp?" queried Scissorleaf.
Jadekit stretched out. "I wanted to explore."
Stealthvixen gave a worried glance at Jadekit. "You should really go back."
"Yeah, I suppose I should." Jadekit licked her paw casually. "Bye, Jewelpaw!"
"Goodbye, Jadekit." Jewelpaw watched Jadekit pad away.
She turned to Scissorleaf and Stealthvixen. "Berrypaw isn't here." she stated.
Stealthvixen nodded. "We could go and check Twolegplace."
Thank goodness we aren't checking NightClan camp. Jewelpaw shuddered.
"Good idea." replied Scissorleaf. "Let's go!"
The band of cats bounded to Twolegplace.
Chapter 24
Berrypaw was lost somewhere in Twolegplace.
A Twoleg had shoved a collar on her earlier before.
She knew it was useless to try and come back. She'd just get lost deeper.
Berrypaw thought deeply about LightningClan.
If I hadn't come back, I wouldn't have met Rainypaw...
She imagined it all: his fluffy blue-gray pelt, his deep yellow eyes... And best of all, his funny, smart, and kind personality.
He didn't know that Berrypaw loved him. She was too young.
They were only best friends, and Berrypaw was too afraid to say otherwise.
She sighed and murmured to herself, "I'll come back for you, Rainypaw."
Suddenly, she heard the thumping of paws across the earth, echoing from the ground.
"Berrypaw!"
Berrypaw's eyes widened. "Jewelpaw?"
"It's us!" Jewelpaw, Scissorleaf, and Stealthvixen were behind her.
"Did you bring Rainypaw?" Berrypaw whispered to Jewelpaw, her ears perked up excitedly.
Jewelpaw frowned. "No." Quietly, she added: "You really like him, don't you?"
Berrypaw blushed, a wave of heat surging through her. "Uh..."
"That's what I thought." purred Jewelpaw.
Chapter 25
Berrypaw had been back in camp for quite a few days now. She enjoyed hunting with Rainypaw more than anything.
The apprentices were all on a patrol with Frostlily one day, and Berrypaw barely noticed that she was brushing up against Rainypaw's coat. But a sudden warmth blasted inside her, and she was happy.
Smiling, she looked behind her at Jewelpaw, who was chatting with Emberpaw and Blackpaw.
I'm the happiest one of them all, no doubt.
Frostlily trekked through the forest, looking for prey, and the apprentices followed her.
"This is fun." Rainypaw whispered.
Berrypaw laughed. "It won't be for Jewelpaw and her friends when Frostlily's trying to catch prey and their chattering scares it off!"
The friends shared a good laugh and smiled at each other.
I wonder if he feels the same way... Berrypaw wondered.
"Just a minute." mewed Rainypaw. He padded in Jewelpaw's direction, dragged her over, and whispered something in her ear.
Jewelpaw's bright amber eyes widened.
Oh, no. Silently, Berrypaw panicked. What is he telling her?
Rainypaw padded back, but before Berrypaw could say anything, he sniffed the air. "Thrush!" He got into the hunter's crouch and caught the bird with an expert leap.
Berrypaw's expression brightened. Rainypaw was a wonderful hunter.
"Great catch!" She beamed brightly.
Rainypaw smiled. "It wasn't THAT great."
Berrypaw rolled her eyes. "Don't be a mouse-brain! That was a wonderful catch, and you know it."
Rainypaw blushed, but suddenly fell to the ground.
"Rainypaw?" Berrypaw's eyes widened in fear. "RAINYPAW!"
Chapter 26
"Will he be okay?" Berrypaw asked. "What's happening to him?"
Scissorleaf gave Berrypaw a sad glance. "He's gotten some kind of illness, one I've never seen."
"I think I ate... a bad squirrel..." croaked Rainypaw weakly from the corner of the den. He fell asleep again.
"You love him?"
It was Rowanpaw. She was standing at the den entrance. There wasn't a hint of mockery or teasing on her face or in her voice, only pain and sorrow.
"I can't say I blame you." Rowanpaw padded into the den and put her paw on his shoulder. "He's a wonderful cat." Her watering eyes sent a silent message to Berrypaw: I love him, too, but you deserve him more than I do.
"I hope he can make it..." Scissorleaf sighed, getting some more herbs.
Berrypaw sadly gave a soft smile. "I BELIEVE he can make it."
Rowanpaw exchanged the disappointed glance.
Rainypaw spasmed again and woke up. "Rowanpaw...?"
Rowanpaw backed away quickly. "I'm here with Berrypaw and Scissorleaf."
"Rainypaw, I..." Berrypaw stepped forward.
"Don't say it." Rainypaw gave one final smile. "You either, Rowanpaw..."
He broke off as two more violent spasms of pain overtook him.
Tears were streaming down Rainypaw, Berrypaw, and Rowanpaw's faces.
Rainypaw slowly stopped breathing, his heart ceased to beat, and his once energetic, lively body was limp and lifeless.
Berrypaw stared down at the motionless body. Crying, she whispered, "Goodbye forever."
Chapter 27
Jewelpaw glanced at Berrypaw. She knew her sister would never be the same.
Jewelpaw had agreed to sit vigil for Rainypaw with Berrypaw. It broke her heart to see her sister and her sister's best friend (Rowanpaw) crying. She sat there anyway. He was pretty admirable. He'd make a great warrior.
"This is why I'm never falling in love." Jewelpaw muttered to herself. There was too much pain to endure!
When dawn had broken and the vigil was over, Cheetahstar smiled down from the Highrock.
"I know we have lost Rainypaw." she announced. "But we will not count our losses, only our gains! Jewelpaw, step forward."
Jewelpaw padded up to Cheetahstar, not expecting this at all.
"Jewelpaw has been a brave and strong member of this Clan, and I believe that she deserves a mentor." Cheetahstar meowed.
Who is it? Jewelpaw wondered until Stealthvixen padded forward, smiling.
Cheetahstar smiled at the two. "Stealthvixen is an honorable member of LightningClan, and has shown wonderful qualities of loyalty and patience. I choose you to mentor Jewelpaw, so that you may teach some of these qualities to her, and show her how to become a warrior of LightningClan."
"Jewelpaw! Stealthvixen!" chanted the Clan happily.
"I'm glad you're my mentor." Jewelpaw purred to Stealthvixen.
Stealthvixen beamed. "I'm glad, too."
The two touched noses, as was the ritual.
I wonder what training with a fox will be like...
Chapter 28
The moon was full, and a Gathering was beginning. It was Jewelpaw's first time going.
She met up with a RainClan warrior named Mistystream and a StormClan apprentice, Shimmerpaw. Look how small StormClan and CloudClan are... she thought.
When the Gathering was drawing to a close, Jewelpaw noticed that each tree was engraved with a symbol representing their Clan.
But underneath RainClan's symbol was a rose, which seemed to also be faintly engraved in CloudClan's tree, and beneath LightningClan's symbol was a jewel and a blade of wheat!
Jewelpaw gasped. "This must mean me and someone else...!" she whispered, alarmed. But who?
~~~~~
Jewelpaw was strolling along the border one day when she saw a pinkish-red apprentice and a black-and-white warrior by the RainClan border.
Jewelpaw could nearly tell what the apprentice was thinking: Who are you?
Answering her question, she purred: "I'm Jewelpaw of LightningClan!"
"Hi! I'm Rosepaw!" the other cat replied.
With a wave of her tail, Jewelpaw smiled. "Nice to meet you, Rosepaw! So, how are you?"
Rosepaw smiled back. "I'm fine. Just going on a hunting patrol with my mentor."
"My mentor is a fox. Cool, huh?"
"A fox? Oh, you mean Stealthvixen. I've met her at a Gathering before. She's really nice."
"Come on, Rosepaw." the warrior suddenly interrupted.
"Okay. See you later, Jewelpaw!" called Rosepaw.
Jewelpaw flicked her tail in a sort of goodbye and padded back to camp, wondering if Rosepaw was the blossoming rose on the tree.
Chapter 29
A small mouse, sitting on the ground, didn't notice Jewelpaw trying to catch it.
Just as Jewelpaw pounced, it scuttled away and kicked up a pile of leaf shreds, which arranged themselves into a broken heart.
Jewelpaw's eyes widened. "What does this mean?"
Before she could ponder on that question, Jewelpaw smelled RainClan scent. Could it be Rosepaw?
It definitely wasn't. The scent was too faint.
Stealthvixen padded up. "Can you scent that?"
Jewelpaw nodded. It was an odd mix of RainClan and... blood?
"What is that?" inquired Jewelpaw.
The fox shrugged. "It doesn't smell like a good thing."
Suddenly, a yellow cat leapt out of the bushes. She had a menacing look on her face. "I'm Star!" she growled. "I've come to destroy your Clans!"
More cats jumped out from behind her, and Jewelpaw and Stealthvixen darted into camp, with Star right behind them.
Star rushed for the first den she saw — the medicine cat den. Jewelpaw ran after her. She can't hurt Scissorleaf!
Jewelpaw arrived too late, however. She saw Star's long, sharp claws sinking into Scissorleaf's neck.
"You snakeheart!" Jewelpaw roared and chased Star out of the den, slicing her claws across Star's belly. She hadn't realized it, but Cheetahstar and Stealthvixen were at her side. They drove Star and the rogues she called the "Clawtroopers" out.
The Clan was sitting vigil for Scissorleaf that night when Cheetahstar padded up to Jewelpaw.
"You were very brave today." the leader purred.
Jewelpaw stared at her paws. "But I couldn't save Scissorleaf! Rowanshade looks so sad; it's killing me!"
"She couldn't be saved." Cheetahstar gave Jewelpaw's thick fur a lick. "Nobody blames you. You were wonderful."
"Well, thanks." mewed Jewelpaw. Her eyes glimmered brightly. She was glad to have a leader that was proud of her.
Chapter 30
Another Gathering was beginning. Jewelpaw padded over to RainClan camp to talk to Rosepaw. "Hello, Rosepaw!" she purred.
"Oh, Jewelpaw! Nice to see you again." Rosepaw smiled.
Jewelpaw looked around to make sure nobody was watching, then whispered: "Did you notice the marks on the four trees?"
Rosepaw's eyes went wide. "I thought I was the only cat who had! The rose, the jewel, and the blade of wheat?"
Jewelpaw nodded. "The rose is faintly carved into CloudClan's tree as well. Are we important? And who is the wheat?"
"I'm not sure." A look of confusion spread across Rosepaw's face.
"Maybe we'll get a prophecy or something."
"I hope so. It's so confusing! What is StarClan trying to tell us?"
"Well, it has to be something big, or the trees wouldn't be engraved with our symbols, that's for sure."
Suddenly, Jewelpaw felt something tickle her tail.
"Great StarClan!" Rosepaw nearly leapt a fox-length in the air. "What is that?"
Jewelpaw turned around to see something small and gray on her tail. "It's a mouse! I didn't think mice were dumb enough to wander into a crowd of cats!" she laughed. Rosepaw's expression calmed.
With a swift swipe to the mouse's neck, Jewelpaw collapsed.
"Are you okay?" gasped Rosepaw.
"I think. But why did I fall as soon as I killed that mouse?" Jewelpaw brushed at her soft, thick pelt.
Rosepaw sighed. "It must be another sign."
Maybe... Jewelpaw thought. StarClan, what are you trying to tell us?
Chapter 31
Jewelpaw smoothed her pelt down. She'd just finished fighting Blackpaw as part of her training and came out victorious. Now, Berrypaw and Emberpaw were battling, and she was told to watch them carefully by Stealthvixen; their moves might be useful.
However, Jewelpaw's mind was lost in thought about the Gathering last night. Collapsing as that mouse was killed couldn't just be a coincidence. She also remembered vividly the moment where the mouse she was trying to catch scuttled away and left behind a broken heart shape in the leaves. What could this all mean? Am I going to fall in love with a mouse?
Jewelpaw dismissed this nonsensical thought. There was no way! Mice were prey. How could she talk to one, let alone fall in love with one?
"It's impossible." murmured Jewelpaw.
"What did you say?" Blackpaw asked, snapping Jewelpaw back into reality.
"Nothing." Jewelpaw lied.
She sighed. It was so confusing; why couldn't StarClan ever give a straight answer?
~~~~~
"Jewelpaw..." Berrypaw mewed after her battle with Emberpaw. "Come here."
"What is it?" queried Jewelpaw, padding towards her.
"Before Rainypaw—" Berrypaw choked off, and Jewelpaw exchanged a knowing glance with her. "What did he tell you?"
"What do you mean?"
"He whispered something in your ear."
"Oh, right." Jewelpaw remembered this. "He said... he said he really liked you."
Berrypaw's eyes lit up. "Really?"
Jewelpaw gave her a gaze of unreadable emotion, like a mixture of sad and happy. "I wonder why he had to leave us..." she whispered to her sister, curling her tail around Berrypaw's fluffy pelt.
Chapter 32
Amareaquas had died recently, and it was all Cruentilapidis' fault. She'd killed him slowly, leaving his counterpart, Rainypaw, to mysteriously die.
Not that she cared. She was happy as could be, what with him annoying her and all. She'd had enough of it.
Cruentilapidis delighted when she saw Berrypaw and Rowanpaw crying over him. "How romantic." she'd hissed, her eyes narrowed.
Now, she was going to try to get rid of Surrexitamoris and Crystalliamore with the help of Surrexitodia, a pursuit that would last for many moons.
~~~~~
Jewelpaw's mind was whirling. She didn't know how Rainypaw'd died, she didn't know what the mouse prophecies meant, and she didn't know why she felt like she could read minds at times. Everything that was happening now confused her.
More confusing things happened; like when she was out training with Stealthvixen and they heard the tiny mewl of a kit coming from a bush.
Jewelpaw bounded over to it and found a small tortoiseshell she-kit, alone and helpless. Her eyes seemed to have just opened, but they were already changing from blue to an aqua color.
Stealthvixen and Jewelpaw took her back to camp, where she was named Aquakit and taken in by a queen named Brightbloom.
Brightbloom, who had lost all of her kits to greencough in this harsh leaf-bare, was delighted to have a kit to care for.
But two moons later, Brightbloom was taken by greencough, too.
Why are we losing everyone? Jewelpaw thought. Why can't my story be happy?
Chapter 33
Murecana was one of the few mice who'd survived the Great Cat Attack.
That wasn't necessarily a good thing, though. He'd lost nearly everyone else to NocteTribe. Now, he was alone, except for his sister, Mureparum. His parents, Muremiris and Muremollia, had gone missing.
Well, there was another mouse living in the area other than Mureparum; the others had fled.
Muresalix was her name — Murecana didn't know her very well, but her parents were friends with his parents, back when her parents were still alive. Maybe I should get to know her. We can't survive alone.
He walked up to her, and there were tears streaming out of her sparkling blue eyes.
"Hi, there." Murecana squeaked.
Muresalix looked up. Her fur was short and velvety, and he thought she looked kind of pretty. "Oh. Hi, Murecana."
Murecana smiled. "Hello. I was wondering if you could help me and Mureparum find a new home...?"
~~~~~
Suddenly, out of nowhere, Jewelpaw felt a disturbance.
Her heart felt pierced, and she was having an emotional breakdown out of absolutely nowhere, it seemed.
Okay, what is going on here?
Now, everything was even more confusing.
Jewelpaw tried to shake it off. It was nothing; probably just a... She had no guesses as to what it could be.
Maybe it has something to do with the mouse thing.
She tried to forget that. It couldn't be, could it? Something told her, though, that it might be related to that... Great StarClan, what kind of part is a piece of prey going to play in my future?
Chapter 34
"There are supposed to be other Clans out there somewhere." Berrypaw mewed.
"Really?" Jewelpaw asked. "Where'd you hear that?"
"Rowanshade has been telling everyone about it. It might be true!"
Jewelpaw flicked her tail. "If you go looking, you might go insane."
"I think you'd be insane to start looking in the first place! What kind of mouse-brained cat would do that?" scoffed Berrypaw.
"Well, it's just a rumor. We shouldn't belie—"
"Berrypaw!"
Berrypaw turned around. Tiny Aquakit stared up at her.
Aquakit purred. "Could you and Jewelpaw teach me some battle moves? I want to start training now, but Cheetahstar won't let me."
Jewelpaw exchanged a knowing glance with her sister.
"Listen, Aquakit," Jewelpaw explained strictly, "if Cheetahstar won't let you do something, we won't, either."
Berrypaw agreed. "You can't begin apprentice training until you're six moons old. You know that!"
Aquakit sighed and bounded off. "She'll learn." murmured Jewelpaw.
Suddenly, Jewelpaw scented something. It was a mouse, in the middle of camp!
Jewelpaw didn't even try to catch it. She couldn't even bear to meet the mouse's gaze.
"Jewelpaw, are you a mouse-brain? Try to catch it!" Berrypaw lunged for the mouse, but it slipped out of her paws. "Fox dung!" she spat.
Breathing a sigh of relief as the mouse ran off, Jewelpaw frowned at Berrypaw's confused stare. She doesn't know about the omens…
Should I ever tell her?
Chapter 35
"Glimmers! Come meet my friend, Jewelpaw of LightningClan." Rosepaw rushed up to Jewelpaw, beaming brightly.
Jewelpaw noticed a small brown-and-tan kit next to Rosepaw, but before she could say anything, the kit's face filled with worry.
"L–L–LightningClan?" she stammered, glancing up at the ginger tabby apprentice in fear.
"The other Clans are actually quite close; don't look so scared!" Jewelpaw smiled with a laugh.
"Oh—okay. But sometimes, I don't know…" The kit's face saddened again. "it just doesn't seem like they like me."
"Don't worry, Glimmerkit. Everyone likes you—they're just surprised you're joining, that's all," mewed Rosepaw. Jewelpaw gave a small nod of agreement. "Come on; before all the fun ends and you have to go back to the nursery, meet my other friends!" Rosepaw and Glimmerkit bounded away.
Jewelpaw sighed. What if she's the third cat? No, a blade of wheat doesn't have to do with glimmers… Maybe she'll change her name…? She does look kind of wheat-colored. Oh, well. I'll figure it out later.
~~~~~
"I've never been so happy!" a small ginger apprentice laughed.
"Nor have I," The dark gray apprentice next to her smiled.
The ginger cat purred. "Do you think we'll be… mates when we become warriors…?"
"I hope so…" the gray cat replied. "Let's just hope nobody will find out. This is forbidden, you know."
The she-cat's amber eyes suddenly became more solemn. "What if they do find out…?"
The other apprentice gave her a sympathetic glance. "It won't matter. You still have me," He nuzzled her.
Jewelpaw shot awake. Who were they? When was this? Suddenly, her eyes widened. Could that be Ashwind? The cat with him seems like Amberfoot, and I've never met him…
Jewelpaw shook her head. It's still the middle of the night. I should just go back to sleep.
Chapter 36
Jewelpaw blinked awake. Today is the day I get my assessment—the day I become a warrior! she thought excitedly.
She couldn't stop thinking about it until Stealthvixen began to train her for the day. "For your assessment, I want you to catch two squirrels."
"I'll do my best!" Jewelpaw nodded and rushed into the forest. She picked up a squirrel's scent after a bit and spotted it, dropping instinctively into the hunter's crouch. With a swift swipe to its neck, the squirrel was dead.
Yet she still smelled more fresh squirrel scent in that area. Slowly and quietly, she sniffed around until she saw another squirrel and caught it immediately.
Jewelpaw purred and took her catch back to camp. It was time at last for her to become a warrior.
~~~~~
"I, Cheetahstar, leader of LightningClan, call upon my warrior ancestors to look down on this apprentice. She has trained hard to understand the ways of your noble code, and I commend her to you as a warrior in her turn. Jewelpaw, do you promise to uphold the warrior code and to protect and defend your Clan, even at the cost of your life?"
Jewelpaw gazed up at Cheetahstar. "I do, Cheetahstar."
"Then by the power invested in me as leader of LightningClan, I give you your warrior name. Jewelpaw, from this moment on you will be known as Jewelsky! StarClan honors your activeness and determination, and we welcome you as a full warrior of LightningClan."
"Jewelsky! Jewelsky!" the crowd chanted.
Jewelsky had never been prouder and happier in her entire life, but the moment didn't last long. She noticed something out of the corner of her eye. The loud crash of a tree toppling down echoed throughout LightningClan camp, and violently rushing water was heard.
"That's coming from RainClan's territory!" Jewelsky yowled.

The new banner is up since I was out of muse for writing; I wasted that on writing lyrics to Vocaloid songs. ;xD
